Mac OX Speed test your (USB) Hard Drive
Just tried xbench to speed test my harddrives, very surprised that it still works as it looks like the last time it got any updates was for OS 10.3 a few years ago.

I'm still using 10.4.11 and it works great. Thanks for the instructions, it's all still valid. Too bad you're not writing anymore. :)
